‘Violent fugitive’ wanted in Lawrence murder arrested in Maine

Authorities say the suspect in a September homicide was found during a welfare check in Baldwin, Maine.

A 20-year-old man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Lawrence was found and arrested Saturday night in Baldwin, Maine, authorities said.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a request for a welfare check on a man inside a vehicle on Bridgton Road, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Deputies responded to the report at 10:26 p.m.

When a patrol sergeant arrived, the man initially appeared unresponsive, according to the statement. Authorities soon determined he was a “violent fugitive” from Lawrence who had an active warrant for homicide, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect was identified as Jean Michael Warner Delgado, 20, authorities said.

Delgado is charged with murder and carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the shooting death of Hugo Delrosario, 27, of Lawrence, according to a statement from Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker.

The homicide occurred Sept. 13 at 154 Essex St. in Lawrence, Tucker said.

Delgado was taken into custody on the outstanding Massachusetts warrant and transported to the Cumberland County Jail in Maine, the sheriff’s office said. He was being held there while awaiting extradition.

Once returned to Massachusetts, Delgado will be arraigned in court on the charges, Tucker said.
