A Cohasset man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly fatally shot his family dog while attempting to hunt coyotes, police said.
The incident occurred Aug. 16, 2025, at a residence on Hillside Drive, according to a statement from the Cohasset Police Department.
Following an investigation, authorities determined that Christopher Lucas, 59, was allegedly attempting to hunt coyotes from the second-floor window of a room above his garage, according to the police statement.
Police said Lucas discharged a firearm from the window, striking and killing a 14-year-old pet dog named Lise. The dog, which belonged to Lucas’s wife, was in the driveway of the home when shot in the head.
The incident was captured on the home’s security camera system, which showed a family member crying over the dying animal after the shot was fired, police said.
Investigators also determined Lucas did not have a valid Massachusetts hunting license and that the hunting activity occurred outside the legal hunting season, according to police.
Following the investigation, Lucas was charged with animal cruelty, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, hunting without a license, and hunting out of season, according to the police statement.
Lucas was arrested Monday and held at the Cohasset Police Department on a $1,000 cash bail, police said. His license to carry firearms was suspended, and officers seized multiple firearms from the home.
Lucas was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday morning in Quincy District Court, according to court records.
Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley thanked the Massachusetts Environmental Police for assisting in the investigation.
“This was a deeply disturbing incident that involved the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a residential neighborhood and the tragic killing of a family pet,” Quigley said. “Our detectives conducted a thorough and professional investigation to ensure that the facts were carefully documented and that appropriate charges were pursued.”
