Six people were arrested this week in Springfield, Massachusetts as part of a crackdown on drug and gun trafficking rings, authorities announced Thursday.
The Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team carried out two operations in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday, the law enforcement agency said.
The first operation followed a four-month long investigation into a “sophisticated” drug trafficking ring spanning Massachusetts and Puerto Rico, ending with six simultaneous search warrants executed in Springfield, MSP said.
The second operation focused on a mid-level fentanyl trafficker in the greater Springfield area, according to MSP.

As a result of both operations, MSP said six individuals were arrested and law enforcement seized a large cache of firearms — 15 handguns, six rifles, 11 large capacity magazines, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. They also reported confiscating approximately 8.5 kilograms of cocaine and 30,000 bags of fentanyl, along with roughly $63,000 in U.S. currency.
The names of those arrested have not yet been released.
Multiple agencies participated in the operations, including Springfield investigation teams and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, MSP said.
