Providence Police say a 51-year-old man died of his injuries after he was attacked by four juveniles in an incident on Monday evening in Providence.
On Friday, Providence Police identified the man as Romy Alfonso, saying additional information will be released pending his autopsy results.
At around 7:23 p.m. on Monday, patrol officers responded to the area of 249 Manton Ave. for a report of an assault, according to a statement from the Providence Police.
Witnesses told the police that they saw several young people assault a man, “knocking him to the ground and repeatedly kicking and punching him before fleeing the area.”
Officers found the man, later identified as Alfonso, and transported him to Rhode Island Hospital. But throughout the week detectives learned that his condition was deteriorating, and on Friday police announced that he had died from his injuries.
After conducting an investigation, officers located three juveniles on Tuesday and took them into custody in the Manton Avenue area following a separate disturbance.
During interviews with the children’s guardians present, all three admitted to involvement in the earlier assault, police said. A fourth child was also identified and later apprehended by police.
Prior to Alfonso’s death, Police charged the four children, three aged 12 and one 11, with felony assault and conspiracy related to the Jan. 19 incident. The youth also face additional charges stemming from a later disturbance.
A family court judge ordered all four of them to be held at the Rhode Island Training School.
