A U.S. District Judge sentenced a former Lawrence basketball coach to 10 years of federal prison with 10 years of supervised release on Tuesday, after he pleaded guilty to traveling across state lines to have sex with one of his students.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of New Hampshire, on March 7, 2022, Jesus Moore, 36, of Lawrence, a basketball coach at Lawrence High School, ordered a ride-hailing car to transport a Lawrence High School student to a Super 8 Motel in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Moore than also traveled from Massachusetts to the motel, provided the student with alcohol, and engaged in sexual conduct when the student was incapable of consenting.
Moore was arrested in February 2024 after he turned himself in to Manchester, New Hampshire, police.
The young woman reported the alleged assault to SafeSport, a nonprofit organization focused on abuse prevention in the sports community.
The organization then reached out to Lawrence police officers about the incident, and investigators contacted Manchester police.
“Moore abused his position of trust as a teacher and coach to victimize a student,” said U.S. Attorney Erin Creegan in a statement. “Today’s sentence reflects the severity of Moore’s conduct.”
Special Agent in Charge Michael Krol for Homeland Security Investigations New England added that Moore’s “actions were calculated and aimed at harming the very students he was entrusted to protect.”
Krol continued, “We work every day with our law enforcement partners to protect children and bring predators like Moore to justice.”
