A 16-year-old was charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a woman in Canton on Monday night.

Around 6:40 p.m., Canton Police and Fire responded to the Lamplighter Village apartment for a report of a person shot. Emergency personnel found a woman in her 20s who was shot while in a car. She was treated at the scene and transported to a Boston hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was targeted while waiting to meet someone and that person may have been the shooter, police said. A second passenger in the vehicle was not injured.

Canton issued a reverse 911 call to issue a shelter-in-place for the residents of the Lamplighter Village and Canton Woods apartments as well as homes and businesses from Tracywood Road to the Stoughton town line. Residents were also urged to avoid Turnpike Street.

At 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Canton police announced they apprehended a 16-year-old male suspect in connection with the shooting and charged him with attempted murder.
