A former science teacher at a secondary school in the Boston Public Schools district pleaded guilty Thursday to child exploitation, according to prosecutors.
John Magee Gavin, 35, of Brookline, admitted guilt on one count of coercion and enticement of a minor, one count of receipt of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts said in a statement. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in July and remains in federal custody.
Gavin formerly taught at the Josiah Quincy Upper School in Boston, prosecutors said. Before that, he was a sixth-grade teacher at the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School in Hyde Park and a paraprofessional at the Hayes School in Brookline.
Using a Discord account, Gavin messaged “at least 20 underage females” between the ages of 12 and 17 years old, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. The underage girls who Gavin contacted lived in several states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom.
Gavin told the minors that he was a teacher and engaged in sexual conversations with them despite knowing they were underage. He also often asked the children to send him pictures of themselves “engaged in sexually explicit conduct,” according to prosecutors.
Authorities identified Gavin in January and arrested him in February, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. He was charged in Brookline District Court with enticing a child under 16, possession of child pornography, disseminating obscene matter to a minor, and posing a child in a nude or lascivious pose, according to court records.
Investigators seized evidence from Gavin’s Brookline residence and found approximately 94 photos and 53 videos on his phone identified as child sexual abuse material, prosecutors said. The files depicted the rape of male and female minors between the approximate ages of five to 17 years old.
An analysis of Gavin’s Discord account yielded “numerous chats” with female minors where he engaged in “online masturbation sessions” with them, solicited and exchanged images, and had sexual conversations with them while he was at school, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
The Discord chats also included conversations where Gavin expressed a sexual interest in certain Josiah Quincy students, including one freshman student who he said he fantasized about having sex with, according to prosecutors.
The victims in these incidents have since been identified, and law enforcement contacted their families, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
For the coercion and enticement charge, Gavin faces at least 10 years and up to life in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000, prosecutors said. He also faces up to 20 years in prison, at least five years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 each for the charges of possessing and receiving child pornography.
Gavin is scheduled to be sentenced March 12, 2026, according to prosecutors.
Michael Contant, Gavin’s attorney, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.
