A Boston police officer was injured during an alleged altercation at MGM Music Hall at Fenway on Wednesday night.
Officers were assisting music hall security personnel with the removal of an individual from the Kevin Gates concert happening at the venue, and the situation escalated into a “violent disturbance,” police say.
Around 9:50 p.m., Edwin Rivera, 30, of Mashpee, was removed from the venue.
During his removal, Rivera allegedly became combative, threw a beverage, and swung at an officer. Rivera then reportedly grabbed the officer’s jacket, attempted to pull him towards the crowded sidewalk, displaced the officer’s radio, and reached for the officer’s firearm, police say.
Officers were able to eventually place Rivera under arrest despite resistance, say police.
During the altercation with Rivera, Steven Costa, 27, of Hyannis, yelled at and attempted to strike an officer who fell, police said. Costa allegedly ignored several verbal warnings and officers used a taser to take him into custody.
Medical personnel assessed Costa, Rivera, and the injured officer. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of related injuries.
Crossroads Presents, which runs the MGM Music Hall, referred all questions to Boston police.
During booking, Rivera continued to be combative, police say.
Rivera was charged with three felonies and four misdemeanors: assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery as an attempt to disarm an officer, intimidation of an officer, assault and battery of a police officer, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, and disorderly conduct, according to court documents.
Costa was charged with two felonies, four misdemeanors, and one common law charge: assault and battery as an attempt to disarm an officer, intimidation of an officer, resisting arrest, assault, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, and interference with a police officer, according to court documents.
Both suspects are set to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on Thursday.
