Car stolen from Central Mass. hospital with child inside

After a short distance, the suspect ordered the child out of the vehicle, and they escaped unharmed, police said.

A suspect allegedly stole a car parked at a hospital in Gardner on Monday afternoon that had a child inside.

Officers responded following the incident at Heywood Hospital, according to a State Police release. After traveling a short distance, the suspect allegedly ordered the child out of the vehicle, and they exited unharmed. The suspect then fled in the vehicle.

Police utilized data from a cellphone left inside the vehicle to track its location and monitored its movements on Route 2 and later Interstate 495 north.

“When the suspect saw State Police cruisers from a distance, he began operating erratically,” police said. “State Police did not pursue the vehicle for the safety of other motorists. A short time later, Lowell Police located the abandoned vehicle in their City.”
