Police: Rutland ‘caretaker’ allegedly squatted in woman’s home, turned it into illicit erotic massage parlor

A woman and her boyfriend allegedly took over the elderly woman’s home and squatted there when she left for extended medical care.

A woman is facing several charges for allegedly squatting in an elderly woman’s home and turning it into an illicit erotic massage parlor, according to Rutland police.

Maria Martin, 38, is charged with larceny from a building, vandalizing property, and permitting abuse on an elder or disabled person, police said Thursday on Facebook. She allegedly lived with the elderly Rutland resident under the guise of being a caretaker.

The elderly woman left for extended care at a medical facility, and when she returned home, the locks had been changed, according to police. She found her house in disarray with drug paraphernalia lying around, and several of her possessions had been stolen, the department said.

The resident discovered that Martin and her boyfriend had been squatting in her house, police said. When officers investigated, they found evidence suggesting that Martin had been operating an “illicit erotic massage” parlor out of the woman’s home, according to the department.

Martin was arrested and arraigned Aug. 6 at East Brookfield District Court. She was held on $5000 bail and released Friday on personal recognizance, court records show.

Martin is due back in court Sept. 4, court records showed. Her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday afternoon.
