Reading driver charged with motor vehicle homicide in May crash

Nashason Mutugi, 26, allegedly ran a red light, causing a four-car crash that left another driver dead.

A driver has been charged with motor vehicle homicide after a deadly four-car crash in May, according to the Reading Police Department.

Nashason Mutugi, 26, of Reading, was also charged with failure to stop, unsafe passing, and a marked lanes violation following the completion of an investigation and a show cause hearing Wednesday before the clerk magistrate in Woburn District Court. An arraignment is set for Oct. 8.

The initial investigation found that Mutugi ran a red light at the intersection of Main and Hopkins streets, police said. Mutugi was driving a 2006 Volvo XC70 southbound on Main, and he reportedly struck the driver’s side door of a 2014 Ford Fusion that was traveling eastbound on Hopkins. The cars then collided with other vehicles.

The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

“It’s vital that we investigate serious incidents thoroughly, especially when a life is lost, in the best interests of justice,” Reading Police Chief David Clark said. “Thank you to our community for its patience.”
