An Andover man has been apprehended after a carjacking left a 77-year-old man injured in Newburyport on Friday afternoon, according to police.
Newburyport police secured an arrest warrant for David Agneta, 46, and Rhode Island authorities took him into custody Friday night.
Agneta, who authorities said is homeless but previously resided in Gloucester, faces charges of carjacking (two counts) and assault and battery on an elderly or disabled person, Newburyport police said in a release.
Police responded to a High Street home around 3:15 p.m. on Friday for a report that an unknown person went up to a man in his driveway, shoved him to the ground, and stole his car. The suspect reportedly fled east on High Street in the vehicle.
The victim had just arrived home and stepped out of his car when the suspect demanded his keys, police said.
Atlantic Ambulance personnel treated the victim at the scene.
Surveillance video and other evidence led police to identify the suspect as Agneta, they said.
Rhode Island State Police arrested Agneta late Friday night in Exeter, Rhode Island, on a charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
Agneta was expected to be arraigned in a Rhode Island court Monday morning before being brought back to Massachusetts at a later date.
