Gloucester man accused of hitting DPW worker with his car while dropping off recycling amid strike

William Evans, 71, allegedly refused to move his car out of the way of DPW vehicles before striking the worker.

A Gloucester man was arrested Thursday after allegedly hitting a DPW worker with his car while dropping off recycling amid the Republic Services workers’ strike.

Police initially received a report around 11:58 a.m. of an “unwelcome individual” on the DPW property. While officers were en route to the facility, police received an update that a worker had been struck by the individual’s vehicle.

Police later identified the driver as William Evans, 71, of Gloucester, who arrived at the facility before drop-off hours started at noon. “Gloucester residents normally have recycling pickup,” police explained in a release, “but due to an ongoing strike involving waste contractor Republic Services, residents are allowed to drop off recycling directly at the facility from 12-6 p.m.”
