A state trooper was injured Friday night in Revere when he was hit by a moped during a response to a crowd of hundreds igniting illegal fireworks, according to officials.
State police arrested Deshakraaun Abdullahmuhammud, 34, of Everett, who allegedly drove the moped through the crowd and struck the trooper, according to a statement.
Abdullahmuhammud has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, driving with a suspended license, negligent operation, failure to stop for police, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, according to authorities.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, state and Revere police responded to a large crowd on Thornton Street, where people were igniting fireworks in the middle of the street, state police said in the statement. The illegal fireworks posed “a significant public safety threat” to the crowd and nearby neighborhood, according to police.
Police requested mutual aid, including officers from Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Saugus, Winthrop, and transit police, as the crowd grew and “became aggressive,” Revere police said in a statement. The struck trooper was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Revere police arrested two more people in the crowd, Damien Hutchinson, 42, of Malden, and Shaheed Baker, 40, of Chelsea, both for assault and battery and resisting arrest, according to the statement. No other state troopers or Revere police officers were injured.
“I would like to thank all of our law enforcement partners that sent officers to assist us in handling the large crowd last night,” Interim Revere Police Chief Maria LaVita said in the statement Saturday. “Officers were able to de-escalate the situation and maintain public safety.”
The incident marks the second time in recent weeks that a state trooper was injured by someone driving in Revere, according to officials. Akram El Moukhtari, 18, of Revere, was arraigned June 24 in Chelsea District Court after he allegedly struck and injured Lieutenant Donald Bossi while riding a stolen motorcycle.
Bossi was hit and seriously injured on Revere Beach Boulevard outside the state police barracks, and he was propelled approximately 45 feet on impact. El Moukhtari was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, receiving a stolen vehicle, and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries, court documents showed.
Bossi is in critical condition but is expected to survive. Col. Geoffrey Noble called attention to the seriousness of the two incidents and wished both troopers full recoveries in a statement Saturday.
“Despite our best efforts to de-escalate two situations around Revere Beach, aggressive drivers on stolen and unregistered vehicles in this area have seriously injured two Troopers in the same number of weeks,” Noble said in the statement. “I wish the Trooper a full recovery, and we continue to support Lieutenant Donald Bossi who remains in critical condition.”
