A driver allegedly struck and seriously injured a Massachusetts State Police trooper on I-95 west in the very early hours of Tuesday.
The incident took place shortly after 2:20 a.m. near exit 51 in Chicopee, State Police noted in a statement.
The driver fled the scene, but has since been arrested, according to multiple media outlets including WCVB-TV.
The trooper, who had been conducting a motor vehicle stop at the time, was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, a level 1 trauma center, for treatment, authorities said.
Police and fire officials closed all westbound lanes of the highway amid the crash response.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact State Police detectives assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s office at 413-505-5993.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect or the trooper. State Police will host a press conference at Baystate Medical Center at 2 p.m. An update on the trooper’s injuries is expected then.
“Praying that the Trooper injured makes a full recovery and keeping their family in my thoughts,” Gov. Maura Healey posted on social media. “I’m urging everyone on the road to drive safely and look out for law enforcement officers.”
The men and women of the @MassStatePolice put their lives on the line every day, even during what should be a routine traffic stop.
