The victim of a murder at an Allston apartment building Monday has been identified, according to police.
Allston resident Peggy Yousef, 77, was found dead at 82 Glenville Ave. after officers responded to a radio call just before 8 p.m. for a “possible domestic violence incident,” Boston police said in a statement.
Omar Riaz, 26, of Boston, was identified as the suspect and apprehended near 50 Quint Ave. following an attempted carjacking, police said. He was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court’s Brighton division and pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, armed carjacking, and resisting arrest, court records show.
Officers at the scene told a Boston Globe reporter that Riaz fled through a window after they discovered Yousef’s body. Authorities reportedly chased him through several yards and streets before using their Tasers to detain him as he tried to steal a car.
Riaz is related to Yousef and killed her in her bedroom while his girlfriend was in another room, Boston 25 News reported. His girlfriend was later taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Police allegedly recovered a bloody sword and bat from the scene, Boston 25 reported.
Following a mental health evaluation Wednesday, Riaz was committed without bail to Suffolk County Jail, court records show. He is due back in court for a hearing May 23.
George E. Murphy Jr., Riaz’s attorney, did not immediately return a request for comment Thursday evening.
