A Boston police officer was charged Tuesday with operating under the influence after allegedly crashing into a cruiser driven by another off-duty police officer, officials said.
Stephen O’Connell, 38, of Hanover, was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, failure to signal, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle along with OUI, according to a statement from Massachusetts State Police.
State troopers witnessed the car crash after midnight on April 1 on Route 3 Southbound in Weymouth, according to the statement.
A black 2023 Nissan Frontier lost control and struck an unmarked Boston Police cruiser, which went across multiple lanes and into a tree line off the road. The officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the Nissan Frontier, identified as O’Connell, “displayed several signs of impairment” and was arrested, according to the statement.
O’Connell was taken to the Norwell barracks for booking but was released on his personal recognizance to appear in Quincy District Court.
