A Saugus man pleaded guilty Wednesday to embezzling funds from a bank that employed him as a teller, officials said.
Derek Aut, 28, pleaded guilty to embezzlement by a bank employee and aggravated identity theft, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Aut, who was working as a teller at a Boston branch of a national bank at the time, stole money from two customers’ bank accounts by forging their names on withdrawal slips, according to the statement. When one customer noticed the missing funds, Aut reportedly attempted to cover up the theft by withdrawing more money from the other customer’s account and depositing it into the first account.
In total, Aut took over $180,000 from the accounts, according to the statement.
Previously, Aut was charged by criminal complaint on Dec. 18, 2024. His sentencing is scheduled for June 16.
