Alabama man charged in 1980 South End murder expected to plead guilty
Steven Fike is expected to plead guilty to manslaughter in the decades-old killing of a woman in Boston.
An Alabama inmate is expected to plead guilty to manslaughter after he was charged in 2019 in the decades-old killing of a woman in Boston, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
Steven Fike, 67, previously pleaded not guilty to the killing of 19-year-old Wendy Dansereau at his arraignment in 2022, according to court records. He is now expected to plead guilty at a March 12 hearing in Suffolk Superior Court, the statement said.
On March 18, 1980, Dansereau’s body was found in a room at the Hotel Diplomat in the South End, according to the statement. Evidence showed that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

A DNA sample collected during the early stages of the investigation was entered into the FBI’s national DNA database and matched Fike’s genetic profile, the statement said.
Fike’s DNA was entered into the database after he was convicted for a 1982 rape and murder in Alabama, according to the statement. Fike is currently serving a life term in prison with the possibility of parole for the conviction, the statement said.
