A drunken driver allegedly crashed into the Nantucket Civil War Monument on Wednesday night, damaging the structure.
Around 8:20 p.m., authorities responded to the area of Milk and Main streets for a report of a one-car collision, police said.
The car was found resting on its roof on the sidewalk beside the monument, which was damaged in the crash, according to the Nantucket Fire Department.
The monument, about 150 years old, has the words “To the sons of Nantucket who, by land and sea gave their lives to preserve a united county,” inscribed on it.
The vehicle was towed and Nantucket Public Works was notified about the destruction to the monument.
Nantucket police and fire departments secured the area, and nine fire department personnel, including an ambulance, heavy rescue truck, and utility truck, responded. Crews cleared the scene by roughly 10 p.m.
The driver, Lucas Araujo Franca de Brito, 27, of Nantucket, was taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital with injuries, authorities said. He was arrested at the hospital and charged with operating under the influence, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failing to stop, and speeding.
The Nantucket Current captured a video of the scene.
