Conn. man charged with larceny, allegedly stole over $5,000 worth of library books

A Middletown, Conn. man is facing one charge of third-degree larceny after he allegedly stole $5,600 worth of library books, police said.

A Middletown, Conn. man was arrested and charged with third-degree larceny after allegedly stealing approximately $5,600 worth of library books, according to Wethersfield, Conn. police.

In December of 2023, the director of the Wethersfield Public Library notified police that library books valued at about $5,600 had been stolen, Wethersfield police said in a press release.

After an investigation that included assistance from the West Hartford Police Department, Wethersfield police identified Levi Preston, 50, of Middletown, as a suspect, according to the press release.

Preston was arrested and charged with larceny in the third degree Jan. 28, the press release said. He was later released on a $1,000 non-surety bond, according to the release.

Preston has been linked to similar incidents across central Connecticut, including in Middletown and West Hartford, NBC Connecticut reported.

Preston was arrested by West Hartford police for allegedly the same crime, and a Middletown police warrant includes accusations of similar thefts, according to NBC Connecticut. In the warrant, police said that Preston would allegedly scan the books to check their value, steal them, and re-sell them online, NBC Connecticut reported.

Preston is scheduled for a Feb. 18 arraignment at New Britain Superior Court, according to court records.
