A Lowell man was arrested on Friday for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy and avoided detention for over three years, prosecutors said.
Darasy Chhim, 39, was originally charged with “conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute heroin, cocaine base, fentanyl, MDMA, 500 grams or more of cocaine and 500 grams or more of methamphetamine,” the United States Attorney’s office for Massachusetts said in a statement.
Chhim and 14 others were charged in June 2021, but Chhim eluded apprehension until Jan. 10, when he was found in a Lowell home, the statement said.
Court documents allege Chhim was a part of the One Family Clique street gang — a national alliance of several gangs based out of Lowell — who conspired to distribute narcotics within Lowell and in states like California and Virginia between 2019 and 2021. The group handled large amounts of dangerous substances, such as fentanyl and methamphetamines, prosecutors said.
Chhim is said to be a drug distributor for the OFC and has attended leadership meetings, according to court documents. Chhim has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2004, the documents show.
Chhim’s charge carries a sentence of up to 20 in prison, between three years to life of supervised release, and up to a $1 million fine, the U.S. Attorney’s statement said.
The Lowell Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.
