Former Cape Cod police officer pleads guilty to child porn charges

Snapchat flagged the then-Brewster police officer's account and sent it to state police for investigation.

A former Brewster police officer who was arrested in July on child pornography and other charges has pleaded guilty, court records show.

More on Matthew Marshall

Matthew B. Marshall’s charges include possession of child pornography and dissemination of child pornography. He was arrested in July after Snapchat flagged a video linked to his account that allegedly depicted a fully nude girl between the ages of about 10 and 13 and notified State Police. Marshall was an active member of the Brewster Police Department at the time of his arrest; the department then placed him on leave. He resigned later that month, Brewster Police Chief Heath Eldredge told the Cape Cod Times.

When investigators obtained a search warrant for Marshall’s Snapchat data, they allegedly found an additional video of three teen girls exposing their breasts or underwear, which he had sent to five other users.

He was also charged with defacement of real and personal property, unlawful communication of record information, and photos taken outside of first responder’s official duties, based on a series of other videos investigators found.

There were allegedly clips of Marshall urinating on public restroom sinks, including one in which he did so at a Dunkin’ in Yarmouth while wearing his Brewster police uniform, and another where he showed Criminal Justice Information System data. Another video, which appears to have been taken inside a residence as he and other Brewster police were responding to a call for service, depicted an elderly man who was nude and did not know he was being filmed.

Eldredge said in a statement posted to Facebook after the arrest that the allegations were “offensive and absolutely not in line with the policies and values of the Brewster Police Department.”

Marshall pleaded guilty to all charges, according to court paperwork. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 27 in Barnstable Superior Court.
