A Randolph woman is facing several charges for allegedly assaulting an off-duty Stoughton police officer during an apparent road rage incident.
Vashiyra Mason, 20, was arrested on Dec. 22 and arraigned in Stoughton District Court the following day. She was charged with assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, according to Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara.
Stoughton police responded to the area of 278 Washington St. just after 1 p.m. for a disturbance after an off-duty sergeant called to report he was following a vehicle that allegedly side-swiped his car and left the scene, according to officials.
Upon arrival, police found the two vehicles stopped in a parking lot. An on-duty responding Stoughton police officer witnessed Mason allegedly grab a woman by her hair and punch her in the back of the head multiple times, according to officials.
Investigators said Mason allegedly drove into the oncoming traffic lane and around the off-duty officer’s vehicle on Pine Street and side-swiped the front of the car. Officers say she later stopped in a parking lot, where the off-duty officer followed her.
“In the parking lot, the off-duty officer identified himself multiple times as a Stoughton police sergeant in an attempt to de-escalate the situation,” Stoughton police said in a statement. “Mason became belligerent, using slurs and hitting the off-duty officer in the upper body, neck, and face area.”
Police said the off-duty officer restrained Mason to prevent her from injuring him or herself.
A 19-year-old Brockton woman who was a passenger in Mason’s car allegedly hit the off-duty officer in the back of his head and neck and then attacked a woman who was with the off-duty officer, according to officials.
Police arrived shortly after and said they witnessed Mason hitting the woman who was with the off-duty officer.
The Brockton woman will face charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery, and resisting arrest. Police couldn’t release her identity because she was being summoned, and the court had not yet issued a criminal complaint.
