A Marshfield woman pleaded guilty on Nov. 25 to driving under the influence and other charges in a 2022 crash that killed a man in Hull, prosecutors said.
Jennifer Bowes was driving with her young child on March 25, 2022, when she struck John Duxbury’s vehicle head-on, District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office said in a statement.
Officers responded to the crash on Nantasket Avenue in Hull around 1:50 p.m. Duxbury, 64, sustained life-threatening injuries and died later that day, the statement said.
When first responders took Bowes and her child to South Shore Hospital for a medical evaluation after the crash, prosecutors said personnel treating Bowes “noticed symptoms of impairment.”
Cruz’s office said an investigation determined Bowes had benzodiazepines, cannabis, and cocaine in her bloodstream during the time of the crash.
Bowes, 42, pleaded guilty to charges of motor vehicle homicide, child endangerment while operating under the influence of drugs, and reckless endangerment of a child, prosecutors said.
Judge Michael Cahillane sentenced her to three to five years in prison, followed by five years of probation, court documents show. During probation, Bowes will have to stay sober, submit to random drug and alcohol screenings, surrender her license for 15 years, and complete 50 hours of community service.
A press release from Duxbury’s family said he was a lifelong Hingham resident who left behind one son, two daughters, and a sister.
“He was a good friend, a true family man,” Duxbury’s friend, Steve Levin, said in the statement. “He was taken all too soon and in such a senseless way. A real tragedy.”
Representation for Bowes did not immediately reply to a request for comment.
