A woman was found dead in a Chicopee home and a man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after what authorities said was a “domestic incident.”
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident and released a statement on the events. Police received a call reporting a disturbance in the 0-100 block of West Street early Tuesday morning, the statement said.
Officers found a man suffering from a neck laceration in the bedroom of the home, the statement said. After a protective sweep of the house, the statement said, officers found a woman “displaying conclusive signs of death.”
Chicopee Mayor John L. Vieau called the crime scene “horrific” in a separate statement released Tuesday afternoon.
Vieau said the victim was 21 and police arrested a man, 28, in connection with the incident. A spokesperson for Vieau’s office did not immediately return a request to clarify whether the man taken into custody was the same one police found injured in the home. However, the mayor said police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.
“This news, while reassuring, does not take away from our sadness about this senseless act of violence,” Vieau said in the statement. “We lament the scourge of domestic violence in our nation, and we send our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim.”
