Update: On Friday, the Hampden district attorney identified the man as Devin Lewis of Springfield.
A 24-year-old man was fatally shot by police in Springfield overnight on Thursday, officials said.
At 1 a.m., officers were dispatched to Lyman Street for a report of a man with a gun, police Superintendent Lawrence Akers said at a press conference following the shooting.
When officers arrived, they came into contact with a man holding two firearms at an apartment building’s entrance, according to a statement from Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.
“Due to circumstances that remain under investigation, two officers fired their service pistol, one officer striking the 24-year-old, wounding him,” the statement said.
Officers administered medical assistance to help the man and transported him to Baystate Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries, Akers said.
At the press conference, the superintendent said he will allow the police involved in the shooting to “take whatever leave is necessary to make sure that their state of mind is correct.”
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office and the Springfield Police Department’s Detective Bureau continue to investigate the incident.
“I want to extend my heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man that lost his life this morning,” Akers said. “I hope that they can find strength and support as they navigate through this painful loss.”
