Plainville woman set own residence on fire, displacing 20 in early morning hours, police say

Representation for Heather MacKinnon said she may have been undergoing a mental health crisis when she allegedly lit her furniture on fire.

A woman allegedly set her own apartment complex on fire in Plainville on Monday morning, displacing more than 20 of her neighbors, authorities said.

The fire happened around 5:15 a.m. at an apartment complex at 71 Messenger Street, authorities said. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, but authorities said “extensive smoke and heat damage” spread throughout the building.

First responders evaluated several residents for smoke inhalation, but said no one was injured. EMS treated one pet for injuries, the statement said.

“Based on an examination of the scene, witness interviews, and additional evidence, investigators determined that the fire had been intentionally set,” the statement said. “They further identified 61-year-old Heather A. MacKinnon as the responsible party.”

Prosecutors charged Heather MacKinnon, 61, with arson, disorderly conduct, and property destruction. A statement of facts filed in Wrentham District Court claims the fire damaged $1 million worth of property. Multiple witness reports claim MacKinnon started the fire in her apartment.

“A lot of the residents were accusing MacKinnon was responsible and have been upset with her antics over the years,” the statement of facts said.

Court records show MacKinnon will be held without bail following a mental health hearing.

“It’s been the opinion of many that what happened may have been the result of mental health issues,” representation for MacKinnon, Edward Sweeney III, told Boston.com. “We are hoping to get her evaluated and see what the result is.”
