An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl in Central Falls, Rhode Island, on Thursday, police say.
At 8:55 a.m. that day, Central Falls police responded to 22 Earle St. for a report of a medical assist, according to Central Falls Chief of Police Anthony Roberson.
Upon officers’ arrival, Central Falls Fire Department members were giving medical assistance to an unresponsive teenage girl, who was taken to a Rhode Island hospital, where medical staff continued to provide care.
“Tragically, that battle was lost,” Roberson said at a press conference Friday.
The girl died early Friday morning.
“I’m devastated by the tragic loss of a young girl in our community,” Central Falls Mayor Maria Rivera said through tears at the press conference. “My heart breaks for her family who now face unimaginable pain and loss no parent should ever, ever have to endure.”
The man and the girl were acquaintances, according to Central Falls Police Major Christopher A. Reed, and the girl was at a friend’s house when the incident took place.
Authorities said the suspect was arrested at his residence in less than 12 hours.
The suspect faces charges of manslaughter, possession of a firearm without a license, and transferring a firearm to a juvenile, Reed said. The man that was arrested is Moises Maldonado, 18, of Central Falls, The Boston Globe reported.
“We’ve come a long way in making Central Falls safer,” Rivera said. “But every incident like this reminds us that more needs to be done.”
