A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection to the 2017 murder of an 18-year-old Lawrence basketball player, officials said.
Robert Severino, who was 17 at the time of the murder, was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty in Lawrence District Court Thursday. Severino is accused of shooting and killing Juan Espinal on March 8, 2017, the Essex County District Attorney said.
At that time, Espinal was pronounced dead at the intersection of Crescent and Forest streets in Lawrence, officials said. According to the DA, he was shot multiple times by two people, including Severino.
Two men waiting behind a parked car allegedly ambushed Espinal as he walked home, the Massachusetts State Police said. They chased him up Forest Street and shot him before fleeing on foot.
Investigators did not say how Severino was connected to the killing. He was apprehended by the State Police Violent Fugitives Apprehension Section, the Worcester Police Department, and the Lawrence Police Department.
Espinal worked multiple jobs, was focusing on getting his diploma, and had just gotten his own apartment, The Boston Globe reported in 2017. He was planning to join the Navy or the Army.
Severino will be back in court Nov. 18.
