Judge Beverly Cannone back on the bench for Karen Read’s retrial
Just as she oversaw Read’s initial trial last summer, Cannone will preside over January's highly anticipated retrial.
While Karen Read’s pending retrial and appeals process have introduced trial watchers to a new cast of characters, at least one key player will remain unchanged when Read heads back to court in January.

Just as she oversaw Read’s initial trial last summer, Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone will preside over the upcoming retrial, a court spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The confirmation follows online speculation that Cannone might be replaced on the Read case after she rotates out of her term as Norfolk County’s regional administrative justice in 2025.
Cannone declared a mistrial in the case July 1 after jurors reported a deadlock. She later denied a defense motion to dismiss two of Read’s charges after lawyers on both sides said they heard from jurors who indicated the jury actually internally agreed to acquit Read of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Read’s lawyers have appealed the decision to the Supreme Judicial Court, with oral arguments slated for Nov. 6.
Read, 44, is accused of striking Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, her boyfriend of two years, with her SUV and leaving him to die in a blizzard on Jan. 29, 2022. Her lawyers argue she was framed in a law enforcement coverup.
Her retrial is scheduled to begin Jan. 27.
