One man died Monday night after a shooting near an apartment complex in Jamaica Plain.
At 9:22 p.m., Boston police officers on patrol in the area of 277 Centre St. heard multiple gunshots nearby. They immediately registered a ShotSpotter activation that also alerted them to the gunfire, Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said at a press conference just before midnight.
ShotSpotter technology uses acoustic sensors to detect gunshots and quickly tell authorities where to respond.
Police and EMS responded to the scene, which was near the Mildred C. Hailey Apartments, a low-income housing development in the area of the Jackson Square MBTA station. There, they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was treated at the scene by both EMS and police officers, before being brought to a local hospital.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital, McLaughlin said. The victim’s name has not been released.
Officers recovered multiple weapons from the scene of the shooting. Edwin Vinales, 19, of Boston, allegedly discarded a firearm and was placed under arrest Monday night. He is facing charges of firearms violations related to the incident Monday, and was also wanted on outstanding warrants, McLaughlin said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Boston police. Investigators were focusing on a large area Monday evening.
“At this time we’re dealing with a very large and active crime scene that spreads out through most of the development,” McLaughlin said.
