Quincy police responded to a report of a car crash and shots fired around 11 p.m. on Saturday, the department said.

Officers responding to a crash at 240 Willard Street found a vehicle with “heavy damage” in the street, the department said in a statement. Police said they found the driver, who was conscious but trapped in the wreckage and had “multiple gunshot wounds.” The Quincy Fire Department used the Jaws of Life rescue tool to free the victim, after which officers applied a tourniquet, the statement said.

First responders took the gunshot victim to the hospital, police said. According to the statement, the car’s passenger was unharmed and outside the car when officers arrived.

An investigation into the crash found that the victim and the passenger were driving near Copeland Street when a dark sedan pulled up and someone inside shot at the victim’s car, police said. The victim then drove to the area of 240 Willard Street and crashed, the statement said.
