Police arrested two men after an AR-style rifle and ammunition were found hidden in Hingham woods.

At about 4 p.m. Friday, officers began looking for a man to conduct a welfare check at the request of Bridgewater police, who said the man might have a rifle. Police then advised those at the Quarry Restaurant and Linden Ponds senior residential community — near where the man was believed to be — to shelter in place while they searched the area, a statement from Hingham police said.

Police found Scott M. McCabe, 32, of Bridgewater in that area and took him to the hospital. They also found a second man, Mark A. Cerundolo, 32, of West Harwich in the Quarry parking lot with a rifle ammunition container in his truck, the statement said.

Hingham and Norwell police K-9 units searched the wooded area near the parking lot and found two additional ammunition containers, two 30 round magazines, one 10 round magazine, and a 5.56 caliber AR-style rifle with no serial numbers — commonly referred to as a “ghost gun,” officials said.

Another K-9 from Foxborough police arrived later and searched the area for additional guns or ammunition but did not find any, police said.

After the investigation, McCabe and Cerundolo were both arrested.

McCabe was charged with possession of a large capacity firearm, three counts of possession of a large capacity feeding device, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, defacing/no serial number on a firearm, and two counts of possession of ammunition without an FID card, authorities said.

Cerundolo was charged with witness intimidation/misleading police, possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and trespassing.

McCabe was held on $15,000 cash bail at the Hingham police station, and Cerundolo was released after posting $5,000 cash bail, police said.

Both men were then arraigned at Hingham District Court on Sept. 9 and ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing set for Sept. 12.

Based on the initial investigation, Bridgewater police also charged McCabe, who will be arraigned on these charges in Brockton District Court at a later date, with possession of a firearm without an FID card, possession of ammunition without an FID Card, possession of a large capacity feeding device, and improper storage of a firearm, the statement said.
