Prosecutors say the two shooters who shot and killed a 7-year-old in Providence last week were aiming for her father.
During the arraignment for the two suspected shooters on Tuesday, the Providence Journal reported that Special Assistant Attorney General Alison Bittl said the daughter, Ny’eil Pires, “fought for her life” at the hospital for more than three days before she died on Monday.
The girl was shot in Providence while sitting in a car with her father, Nelson Pires, and brother, the Providence Police Department said. The Thursday evening shooting on Florence Street left her in critical condition, and she later died at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Police arrested two suspects, Shaheem Nathaniel, 26, and Ahmari Cabrera, 19, on Friday.
According to the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General, Nathaniel and Cabrera were arraigned Tuesday in District Court, Providence.
Authorities charged both with 11 counts, including the murder of Ny’eil Pires and assault with intent to commit murder against her father, Nelson Pires.
Other charges include carrying a 9 mm and .45 cal pistol without a license and possession of a ghost gun.
Authorities said Cabrera’s next court date is a status conference on Sept. 9. Nathaniel’s case was transferred to Superior Court at his attorney’s request. His next hearing for a determination of attorney and a bail hearing is on Thursday, Sept. 5.
