10-year-old killed in alleged drunken driving crash identified

Brockton Public Schools shared condolences over the loss of one of their students, Jaylen Bush-Victorian.

The Brockton Public Schools community is mourning the loss of a rising Downey School fifth grader after an alleged drunk driver crashed into his family’s car, killing him, over the weekend. 

In a social media post on Tuesday, the school district shared its condolences for Jaylen Bush-Victorian. The boy’s siblings, who also attend Brockton schools, and his parents were also seriously injured in the crash. 

The post said Jaylen’s mother also serves as a Barrett Russell Early Childhood Center paraprofessional. 

The post said that school district members remain in contact with the family and “will continue to hold them close moving forward, offering every available resource to support them as they mourn this tragic loss. ”

Brockton Public Schools will have grief counselors at the Downey School on Wednesday to help students and staff grieve this loss. 

The man believed to be behind the deadly crash, Michael Escolas, 42, of Oxford, pleaded not guilty on Monday in Wrentham District Court and was ordered held on a $100,000 cash bail. 

Escolas is charged with motor vehicle manslaughter, drinking and driving under the second offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, motor vehicle theft, and nine counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. 

According to the District Attorney’s office, Escolas is expected to return to court on Sept. 19 for a probable cause hearing.

The police had not released the name of the child.
