The Melrose Police Department is asking the public for help investigating an apparent act of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery.
The alleged vandalism happened at the Workmen’s Circle Cemetery, the department said in a statement. The cemetery is owned and managed by the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts.
Melrose police said they received a report about the vandalism around 2 p.m. on Aug. 20. Officers found fencing around the cemetery “knocked over and charred from fire,” the statement said. One headstone was knocked over and blackened from fire, police said.
According to the statement, the fence was intact and the headstone was upright as of Aug. 18.
The department encourages anyone with information to contact them at 781-979-4213.
