Boston police officers arrested a 51-year-old man in downtown Boston on Tuesday after a report of an individual chasing people with a machete.
At about 1 p.m., officers arrested John Madej of South Boston for aggravated assault when responding to the area of 10 Park Plaza, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.
Officers observed the suspect in the area of Boylston Street and Charles Street, authorities said.
As police approached him, Madej “took a fighting stance,” the statement said, but officers were able to apprehend him, uncovering a hunting knife from his front right pants’ pocket.
Following Madej’s arrest, officers determined he already had a warrant for his arrest for failure to register as a sex offender.
Madej was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a dangerous weapon, according to police.
He was expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
