3 more officers decertified by state commission, including former police chief — here’s why
Shawn Cronin, John Delaney, and Jonathan Correia will no longer be allowed to serve as police officers anywhere in the country.
The Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission decertified three more police officers on July 18, records show.
The three men join the list of 20 other officers decertified by POST.
POST was established in the wake of calls for law enforcement reform after the murder of George Floyd by a then-Minneapolis police officer. Its mission is to “improve policing and enhance public confidence in law enforcement” through implementing a fair process for officer discipline and training.
One of the decertified officers, former Dighton Police Chief Shawn Cronin, pleaded guilty to insider trading in January. He resigned from his position in Sep. of 2023. Cronin was sentenced to three months in jail and was ordered to forfeit $71,000 in illegal profits, federal court records show.

Another decertified officer, John Delaney, retired from the Malden Police Department after an internal investigation into his conduct, POST records show. Court records show Delaney was charged in 2021 with threatening to commit a crime, but the charges were dismissed after he completed parole requirements including anger management classes. POST records say Delaney did not “answer, appear, or defend” the misconduct allegations made against him.
Jonathan Correia, a former Brockton police officer, was also decertified. Federal court records show that Correia was sued in 2022 for using excessive force on a suspect. Correia released a police canine on the suspect after he was already in handcuffs, prosecutors said. The dog “viciously bit” the suspect’s arm and left several wounds that later became infected. Correria also did not “answer, appear, or defend” the allegations made against him, the decision from POST said.

Decertified officers appear on the National Decertification Index, which means they will be unable to work as a police officer anywhere in the country.
