A New England School of Law employee was arraigned Wednesday for allegedly using his employer’s Amazon account to purchase $68,000 in merchandise for himself, including equipment for his band “Sloth Machine.”

Gareth Flanagan, 52, of Medford was arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on three counts of larceny.

NESL auditors say they determined the theft amounted to around $68,000 between January 2020 and October 2022. When confronted, Flanagan admitted to the purchases, saying he was “testing” the equipment, according to a press release from the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden.

“As we’ve seen in many work-based theft cases, this man took advantage of his position for personal gain,” Hayden said. “Theft at the workplace is not only a breach of trust but, in this case, impacted faculty and students who relied on the NESL budget for resources and technology.”

Flanagan reportedly returned some of the items to NESL, but not all.

Magistrate Abigail Bryan ordered Flanagan held on $1,000 bail and to stay away from NESL. Flanagan is due back in court on Sept. 9 for a pre-trial conference.
