Boston police are investigating after several men attempted to use a U-Haul truck to steal an ATM from a Dorchester bank Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the area of Talbot and Southern avenues at about 5:53 a.m. for a report of a robbery in progress, a Boston Police Department spokesperson said. That intersection is home to a Rockland Trust Bank branch.

Two or three men had been spotted trying to steal an ATM from the bank, Boston police noted in an incident report. The BPD spokesperson said the suspects attempted to take the machine “by means of a U-Haul truck.”

The U-Haul was unoccupied and still running when officers arrived at the bank, police noted in the report. Both the ATM and truck were damaged, and officers noted that the attempted theft also left electronic parts scattered throughout the bank’s drive-through area, according to the report.

“The potential loss from the ATM remains undetermined at this time,” police wrote.

A witness told investigators he saw two “stocky” men in black hoodies get out of the U-Haul and flee down Talbot Avenue toward New England Avenue, according to the report. Officers searched the area for suspects, to no avail. Boston police later released a surveillance photo showing three men standing near a U-Haul truck outside the bank.

The FBI’s Bank Robbery Task Force has been notified of the incident, the BPD spokesperson said. Police have not made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
