Cambridge police arrest man connected with double shooting at Donnelly Field

Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, of Cambridge, was charged with being involved in the shooting. He was also one of the two people shot.

Cambridge police arrested a suspect in connection with the double shooting that happened last week in the area of Donnelly Field.

Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, of Cambridge, was arrested after detectives found him connected with the shooting that happened on Thursday, May 23, according to a press release from Cambridge police on Tuesday.

Cruceta, who was one of the two people shot in the incident, is charged in Cambridge District Court with assault and battery attempt with a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, firearm discharge within 500 feet of a building, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm without a license.

At 9:39 p.m. that Thursday, Cambridge police responded to reports of multiple gunshots at Donnelly Field, located at 91 Berkshire St., the release said.

A preliminary investigation found that multiple people approached Cruceta at the basketball courts. Following a brief interaction, an exchange of gunfire opened up. 

During the altercation, Cruceta allegedly discharged a firearm and was also shot by one of the oncoming individuals.

Police also found a 22-year-old woman in the basketball courts suffering from a gunshot wound, the release said. Police believe it was from a stray bullet fired by one of the unknown parties. 

EMS personnel transported both individuals to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Cambridge police stated that they believe this was an isolated event.

The investigation is ongoing, and Cambridge police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident, including home surveillance or dash cam video, to contact the Criminal Investigations Unit anonymously through the tip line at 617-349-9151 or online at cambridgepolice.org/TIPS.

Cambridge police are holding a public community safety meeting on Thursday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at St. Anthony’s Parish, 400 Cardinal Medeiros Ave., in Cambridge. The police will share what they can with the community and listen to residents’ questions and concerns.
