A Plymouth County grand jury has indicted Cory Alvarez, 26, who is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at a Comfort Inn in Rockland that was being used as a migrant shelter.
On March 13, police were dispatched to the hotel at 850 Hingham St. for a report of a sexual assault. There, the victim was located and transported to South Shore Hospital; she reportedly identified her attacker via photos.
Alvarez is charged with one count of aggravated rape of a child with a more than 10-year age gap and rape of a child with force, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. He pleaded not guilty on Thursday, March 14, in district court and was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. He was then deemed dangerous and remains in custody without bail.
Since Alvarez’s arrest, the case has received federal attention. Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan expressed concerns regarding the background check process and migrant safety.
Gov. Maura Healey stated that Alvarez passed two background checks — one with the state and one specifically for migrants — and was not previously on any sex offenders list. Healey also told officials that Alvarez entered the state through a federal program, but would not specify which.
According to the congressional inquiry launched by Jordan, Alvarez entered through a program titled “Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.” The program gives migrants a two-year period to live and work in the U.S.
Alvarez will be arraigned on the indictments at a later date in superior court.
