Boston police received some 30 911 calls reporting numerous vehicles drag racing, doing donuts, and blocking a roadway in Back Bay early Sunday morning, police said.
Two officers responded to the area of Dartmouth Street and Marlborough Street at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday after dispatchers received a call informing them that there were approximately 40 people yelling and 15 cars driving the wrong way in the area, according to a police report.
The caller also said there were multiple vehicles doing donuts, drag racing, and racing up and down Commonwealth Avenue. The report noted that about 30 911 calls were made about the incident.
When officers arrived, they were unable to drive to the intersection of Marlborough Street and Exeter Street because of the “multitude” of vehicles on Commonwealth Avenue, according to the report. Officers observed a total of 41 vehicles blocking the roadway, the report said.
Officers parked their vehicles and walked to the intersection, where they saw a “large group” of people gathered.
“Multiple vehicles were observed facing the wrong way on one way streets while others were doing burnouts and donuts, causing the air to be filled with smoke diminishing visibility,” the report read. “Officers observed this to be happening within at least three different intersections along Marlborough Street.”
After instructing people to clear the area, officers said a glass bottle and fireworks were thrown in their direction as they tried to reopen the road, according to the report. They also noticed “professional-looking” cameras recording the illegal activity throughout the entirety of the event.
One responding officer issued five parking violations to vehicles that were double-parked on Commonwealth Avenue, according to the report.
Several units with the Boston Police Department and State Police responded to assist with the incident.
