A former Boston woman was sentenced to six months in prison Thursday for failing to surrender for a previous sentence, instead enjoying beaches, pools, and parties in the Dominican Republic, acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua S. Levy’s office announced.
In 2020, 55-year-old Yris Sanchez was sentenced to 15 months in prison for misuse of her passport, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was granted a request to be released on bond with the agreement that she would self-report later to serve her sentence, officials said.
After several extensions, Sanchez was due to surrender in June 2021, but never showed up, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Instead, prosecutors say Sanchez resided in the Dominican Republic for 20 months following her surrender deadline. While living there, she “posted various daily undertakings on Facebook, including trips to the beach, pool and social functions,” Levy’s office said.
In December 2023, Sanchez pleaded guilty to failing to appear to serve a federal sentence.
Thursday’s six-month sentence will run concurrently with Sanchez’s 15-month sentence for passport misuse. Levy’s office said she will be subject to deportation once she finishes her sentence.
