A mother and daughter died after suffering serious injuries in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in Worcester, according to police.
Worcester police responded to reports of a shooting in the area of 1 Lisbon St. at 3:10 p.m., a spokesman said by email.
At the scene, officers found two gunshot victims in a parked vehicle, a release noted. First responders transported the mother and daughter to an area hospital by ambulance. They were later declared dead.
Family members identified the victims as Chasity Nuñez and Zella, her 11-year-old daughter, local outlets reported. Zella was a Worcester Public Schools student, officials confirmed in a statement.
“The residents of Worcester deserve better,” officials, including Worcester Superintendent Rachel Monárrez, released in a statement. “Worcester is a resilient community, and we know that our residents will lovingly
embrace the victims’ family and friends as we work toward healing from this
traumatic event.”
Photos and video from the scene shared by other news sites including WCVB-TV appeared to show an SUV with dozens of bullet holes.
An investigation remains ongoing, according to police. There were not any reported arrests as of early Wednesday afternoon.
