Kevin Kangethe, the man who escaped from custody in Kenya earlier this month while awaiting extradition for allegedly killing his girlfriend, was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury Wednesday.
Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, was indicted on murder charges for the November 2023 stabbing death of Margaret Mbitu, 31, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office announced in a press release Wednesday.
Kangethe boarded a flight to Kenya after allegedly killing Mbitu, who had been missing for several days, and leaving her body in a Logan Airport garage, State Police said in November.
Kangethe was arrested by Kenyan authorities in a nightclub Jan. 30 and was awaiting extradition when he escaped from police custody Feb. 8 by slipping out of the police station and jumping onto a minivan, Nairobi police said. He was recaptured on Feb. 14, Hayden’s office said.
“Suffice it to say, this has been a custody process with many twists and turns. Along with Margaret Mbitu’s family and friends, we are hoping that the extradition process proceeds in a smooth and timely manner,” Hayden said in a statement. “This indictment makes clear that upon his return to Boston Kevin Kangethe will answer in Superior Court for the brutal killing of Maggie Mbitu, a nurse who cared deeply about so many and who was deeply loved by many in return.”
Kangethe is currently in a Nairobi prison and will undergo extradition proceedings in the coming weeks, Hayden’s office said.
