A Vermont woman, who was reported missing Saturday, was found shot to death just days later, according to police.

Vermont State Police received a report Tuesday around 1 p.m. of a human body found inside a large container on a sand bar in the Missisquoi River near Big Falls of Missiquoi State Park in Troy, a release noted.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington conducted an autopsy and confirmed the identity of the body as 29-year-old Kayla Wright, a Derby resident who had last been seen in Troy on Friday.

The office confirmed Wright’s cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the manner as a homicide, authorities said.

An investigation remains ongoing. Police have not made any arrests, but believe the incident was isolated and that there are not any threats to the public at this time.

On Wednesday, authorities interviewed people who may have information related to Wright’s death and completed a search warrant at a home on Vermont Route 100 in Troy in pursuit of evidence, they said.

The Newport Police Department, Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, and the federal Homeland Security Investigations are assisting Vermont State Police in the case.

Police ask anyone with information to call investigators at the Derby Barracks at 802-334-8881 or submit an anonymous tip online at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
