A man was stabbed late Monday afternoon in Lawrence, and an infant who he had been holding was injured in the incident, but not stabbed, according to city police. Two suspects have since been taken into custody.
Police responded to an “altercation” in the Newbury Street area around 4 p.m. At the scene, officers found the man with apparent stab wounds and the injured infant.
Both victims were treated at the scene and then transported to Lawrence General Hospital by ambulance, police said. Since then, they have both been transferred to Boston hospitals. Neither victim has been publicly identified by police.
In an update Tuesday, police said Santo Simon Tejeda Hernandez, 27, of Lawrence had been arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury. A second person was also in custody.
Hernandez was set to be arraigned Tuesday in Lawrence District Court. Police said the stabbing, which remains under investigation, was not a random act of violence.
