A Rhode Island man has been charged for allegedly fleeing the scene of a car crash that killed his fiancée on New Year’s Day.
Gregory Miller, 42, of Pawtucket, turned himself into Lincoln police on Monday, two days after, for reasons unknown, the car the couple was riding in and Miller was driving went off the roadway, into the air, and landed on its roof, WPRI reports.
Nanleomariz Albizu, a 34-year-old Providence preschool teacher, was killed, according to the news station.
Heartbreaking. The family of Nanleomariz Albizu tells me she recently got engaged to Gregory Miller, who police say caused the crash that took her life.

Albizu was ejected from the vehicle and apparently left in the roadway as Miller fled on foot, police said.
Albizu’s family told WPRI the two were celebrating New Year’s Eve at Twin River Casino before the crash.
“You loved my sister so much. If you love someone so much like that and you get into an accident …. you just want to go ahead and flee?” Ferlbiz, Nanleomariz’s brother, told the station. “You are not a real man, you’re a coward.”
Nanleomariz was a teacher for 10 years at Bishop McVinney School in Providence.
“She just had the biggest heart,” her sister, Nanleoespy, said. “She was always trying to help. She loved everyone.”
Following the crash, Nanleoespy said she was “in disbelief.”
“I was angry,” she told WPRI.
Their family has suffered losses before: Fernalbiz Albizu, Nanleomariz’s brother, was also killed in a car crash in 2015, according to the news station.
“Now she’s with my brother and my dad,” Nanleoespy said. “We’ve got three angels now. Before we had one, then we had two, now we have three. That’s what gives me comfort.”
A close friend of Nanleomariz launched a GoFundMe campaign to help ease the family’s stress. As of Tuesday afternoon, the effort had raised over $9,000 of its $10,000 goal.
Miller was slated to be arraigned Tuesday. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, death resulting, according to WPRI.
42-Year-Old Gregory Miller, the man who left the scene of a crash that killed Nanleomariz Albizu will be held on a $50k surety and will not be allowed to drive. He is due back in court on March 28th. More tonight on @wpri12 pic.twitter.com/6DNwJV56Z7
